Facebook’s Messenger Kids app fails approved contact promise.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) proposed new restrictions to prevent Meta from circulating data from minors, alleging that the company’s Messenger Kids app was in violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and a previous FTC order.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, claimed that children using Messenger Kids would only be able to message their parents and parentally approved contacts through the app. But the FTC claims that there were a number of reported instances of children texting and group video calling unapproved contacts using Messenger Kids.
“Facebook has repeatedly violated its privacy promises,” FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine stated. “The company’s recklessness has put young users at risk, and Facebook needs to answer for its failures.”
